A dull, wet and dreary month ending what was an unsettled, overall wet and dreary summer.

This August had no really warm days and had a few surprisingly cold ones. Later in the month warm nights but cool days dominated allowing the mean minimum temperature to rise above the long term average. Only in the closing days of the month did it start to feel like it was a summer month at all. Around the middle of the month the weather was dire with a succession of wet, cold and cloudy days.

As with July 2008, rainfall was exceptional! Most of which fell during the 2nd and 3rd weeks. There were only 8 days without any rain.
As usual in a summer month there were no air or grass frosts. Thunder was recorded on two occasions but there were none of the usual spectacular thunderstorms associated with an average August.
Sunshine levels were depressingly low, around half of what would normally be expected for this month; less than February 2008 and less than half that of August 2007. There were no days that were cloud-free.
Soil temperatures were variable throughout the month due mainly to the high amount of rainfall.
Winds dominated from the south to west sectors.
For such a wet month it was actually raining for only 57 hours.
Sea temperatures rose gradually throughout the month and on the whole were around average or slightly below average, especially at the end of the month.
Mean pressure was was -6.6 hPa below normal and indicative of the very unsettled nature of this month dominated by low pressure systems and south-westerly winds.
Dewpoints were generally quite low throughout.
With cool and wet conditions it is not surprising that the month ended up more humid than normal.
